Pāpanāsam Śivan

1890 – 1973 · Post-Trinity — Tamil Tyāgarāja

The 'Tamil Tyāgarāja'. Composed over 2,000 kṛtis in Tamil, revitalising the language in Carnatic music.

Biography

Pāpanāsam Śivan (1890–1973) was the most important Tamil-language composer of the twentieth century. Born in Pāpanāsam, Tanjore district, he was deeply influenced by Tyāgarāja's bhakti and dedicated his life to creating a Tamil parallel to the Telugu kṛti tradition.

He composed over 2,000 kṛtis in Tamil, earning him the title 'Tamil Tyāgarāja'. His compositions are characterised by deep devotion, simple yet profound lyrics, and a melodic richness that makes them immediately accessible. The mudrā 'Rāmadāsan' (servant of Rāma) appears in every piece.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who composed primarily in Telugu or Sanskrit, Śivan insisted on Tamil — arguing that the language of the people should be the language of devotion. His kṛtis are now standard repertoire in every Carnatic concert. Primary sources include the Pāpanāsam Śivan Saṅgīta Saṅgraha (Gāyaka Sammelan, 1975–1990) and the Śivan paramparā manuscripts.
