Biography
Svāti Tirunāḷ Rāma Varma (1813–1846) was Maharaja of Travancore from 1829 until his death. A polymath — composer, poet, musicologist, and patron — he is one of the great royal vāggēyakāras of India.
He composed in Sanskrit, Malayalam, Hindi, and Tamil, creating a pan-Indian repertoire that shows influences from both Carnatic and Hindustani traditions. His Sanskrit compositions (particularly 'Bhāvayāmi Raghurāmam' in Sāvēri) are masterpieces of structural elegance. He also composed Hindustani-style dhrupads and khayals, reflecting his patronage of musicians from the North.
The mudrā 'Padmanābha' appears in every composition, linking the composer to the tutelary deity of the Travancore royal family. Primary sources include the Travancore palace manuscript collections and the Svāti Saṅgīta Saṅgraha (Sangeet Natak Akademi, 1963–1975).
