Tyāgarāja

1767 – 1847 · Carnatic Trinity (Tri-mūrti) — the foundational period

Saint-composer of Tiruvaiyāru; founder-figure of the modern Carnatic kṛti. Sang exclusively to Śrī Rāma.

Biography

Tyāgarāja was born on 4 May 1767 in Tiruvārūr to Rāmabrahmam (a Telugu Brahmin śāstri) and Sītamma. The family soon relocated to Tiruvaiyāru on the bank of the Kāveri, where he would live the rest of his life. Tyāgarāja received the Rāma-tāraka mantra from his guru Rāmakṛṣṇānanda and committed himself to a life of devotion to Śrī Rāma, refusing material patronage — including the famous offer of riches by King Sarabhojī II of Tanjore, which he turned down in the kṛti "Nidhi Cāla Sukhamā" (Kalyāṇī).

Tradition holds that he composed around twenty-four thousand kṛtis; about seven hundred survive in the four śiṣya paramparā lineages — Walajapet, Tillaisthanam, Umayalpuram, and Manambuchavadi. The Pañcaratna — five kṛtis in the rare Ghana-rāgas (Nāṭa, Gauḷa, Ārabhi, Varāḷi, Śrī) — are sung as a group at his samādhi each year during the Tyāgarāja Ārādhanā at Tiruvaiyāru.

His style favours the Sādhāraṇī gītī and the kampita gamaka (a slow, breath-deep oscillation on a jīva-svara). The lyric is in spoken Telugu, often conversational — addressing Rāma directly, sometimes chiding, sometimes pleading. Where Dīkṣitar codifies tantric geometry, Tyāgarāja codifies the inner life of the bhakta. Primary sources for the kṛtis catalogued here include T.S. Parthasarathy's Compositions of Tyāgarāja (1968) and the four śiṣya-paramparā manuscript collections (Walajapet, Tillaisthanam, Umayalpuram, Manambuchavadi).

Textual source

Tillaisthanam paramparā

Tillaisthanam paramparā manuscript tradition (Tillaisthanam Rama Iyengar śiṣya lineage)

Tillaisthanam village is ~5 km from Tyāgarāja's residence at Tiruvaiyāru; the Tillaisthanam śiṣya lineage preserved his readings with the greatest textual fidelity, and the Tillaisthanam Aradhana (started by Tillaisthanam Narasimha Bhagavatar in 1908) cemented its position as the geographic anchor for the kṛti corpus.

Citation: Tillaisthanam Panju Ayyar's Note Books of Tyāgarāja Kīrtanais (Music Research Library); supplemented by the Tillaisthanam Narasimha Bhagavatar manuscript collection. Where Tillaisthanam differs from Walajapet/Umayalpuram/Manambuchavadi readings, we adopt the Tillaisthanam text.
