Mysore Vāsudēvācār

1865 – 1961 · Post-Trinity — Mysore court composer

Court composer to the Wodeyar kings of Mysore. Composed elegant kṛtis in Telugu and Sanskrit with the refined aesthetic of the Mysore school.

Biography

Mysore Vāsudēvācār (1865–1961) was the pre-eminent court composer of the Mysore Wodeyar dynasty. Born in Mysore, he was trained in the traditional guru-śiṣya paramparā and became the court's chief musician.

His compositions reflect the refined, restrained aesthetic of the Mysore court — elegant melody, clear structure, and deep emotion without excess. He composed in both Telugu and Sanskrit, and his kṛtis are now standard repertoire, particularly 'Kāpi Ninne Kori' and the Karaharapriyā composition that bears his emotional signature.

The Mysore school of music, of which Vāsudēvācār was the leading figure, is known for its emphasis on rāga-bhāva and the purity of melodic line. Primary sources include the Karnataka Saṅgīta Nṛtya Academy editions (1980) and the Mysore palace manuscripts.
