Stage 9 of 10 · open-ended

Manodharma — Your own voice in the tradition

You no longer learn new kṛtis. You improvise inside the ones you have.

Tyāgarāja did not compose by writing. He sat at his Rāma idol and the kṛti arrived. The same path is open to you.

The teacher

Why this stage now

The śiṣya's voice is no longer derivative once they have lived inside the raga for years. Manodharma is the moment your voice becomes recognisably yours within the tradition.

You're ready for the next stage when

You can ālāpa a raga for 5 minutes without repeating yourself and without leaving the raga's lakṣaṇa.

The protocol

  1. 01Ālāpana: sing a kṛti's raga as free exploration before the kṛti. Depart from the synth preview.
  2. 02Niraval: pick one charaṇa line; sing it 8 times with melodic variation, each time different.
  3. 03Kalpana-svara: improvise svaras inside the raga's grammar, landing on sam.
