Stage 2 of 10 · 3–4 weeks

Mōhanam — Your first raga

Fewer pitch choices means more attention per choice. Mōhanam is where ears settle.

Why Mōhanam first? Five svaras, no flats, no Ma. Less to think about — more to hear.

The teacher

Why this stage now

Tyāgarāja chose Mōhanam for beginners across his four lineages because it is sweet, contained, and unmistakable. You learn the entire raga in five notes.

You're ready for the next stage when

You can sing Mōhanam arōhaṇa + avarōhaṇa from memory, drone-anchored, with Sancara score ≥ 85.

The protocol

  1. 01On the composer page, find Mōhanā Rāma. Read the pallavi aloud — sahitya before svara.
  2. 02Hit play with default voice. Listen for the pakad: S R₂ G₃ P D₂ Ṡ.
  3. 03Switch instrument to veena. Listen again. The raga shape persists through timbre.
  4. 04Sing along — mute synth voice (lower the volume), keep drone + tāla.
  5. 05Practice in Sancara mode with Mōhanam selected. Target score ≥ 85.
